What stands out here is not the CUDA core count but the 84GB of memory: that is the specification that changes the practical class of workloads. NVIDIA's product page still lists the RTX PRO 5500 Blackwell Workstation Edition as upcoming. As of September 15, 2026, there is no official price or final launch date.
The card has 21,760 CUDA cores, 84GB of ECC GDDR7 memory, and bandwidth of up to 1,398GB/s. Its rated board power reaches 600W, with both air-cooled and liquid-cooled configurations planned. The target workloads are predictable: AI, simulation, and professional graphics.
The comparison is unusual. The GeForce RTX 5090 has the same 21,760 CUDA cores but only 32GB of GDDR7, while the RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell offers 24,064 cores and 96GB of ECC GDDR7. The RTX PRO 5500 sits between them on memory, yet matches the consumer flagship's CUDA core count.
That does not mean real-world performance will equal the RTX 5090. Matching core counts alone is not enough to draw that conclusion. We still need final clock speeds, AI workload benchmarks, and data on behavior under sustained load. Price estimates in the $11,000–$13,000 range remain speculation, not official NVIDIA guidance.
One GPU instead of memory compromises
The key implication is simple: 84GB can keep substantially larger models and longer contexts on one GPU than the RTX 5090's 32GB. That reduces the need to split a model across multiple cards or offload some data into system memory.
For local inference, this memory headroom may matter more than additional compute throughput. For LoRA and QLoRA workloads, it also leaves more room for weights, activations, and working context. The RTX PRO 6000 still has an advantage where all 96GB and its higher CUDA core ceiling are critical.
I would look first at the price, sustained memory bandwidth, and performance with all 84GB populated rather than its neat position between two products. Without those figures, the RTX PRO 5500 looks logical but has not yet proven its value. The real question is how much NVIDIA will charge for 52GB more memory than the RTX 5090.
