Here's how I'd explain it: a single CLI agent can code, search, and run commands on its own. But as soon as I need AI automation with multiple agents, an old problem resurfaces: they can't see each other's output and struggle to sync up properly.
The crudest but effective method is tmux. I set up several panes or sessions, each hosting its own agent. An orchestrator sits on top, reading the results, forwarding tasks, and preventing contexts from mixing into a mess.
Doing this manually is fast but can be very rudimentary. Copy-pasting between panes, using sockets, MCP servers, text logs, and summarization scripts—all of this works as long as the system is small.
This is where specialized CLIs like CAO and similar tools come in. I've looked into the patterns, and the idea is sound: a supervisor-agent delegates tasks to worker-agents, handles handoffs, asynchronous assignments, direct messages, and maintains session isolation, often on top of tmux itself.

The line is pretty clear. For 2-4 agents, tmux is still manageable. With 5 or more, the whole system starts to fall apart due to race conditions, lost responses, and bloated context without a proper messaging scheme, task list, and exchange protocol.
