By using Michelangelo for the entire ML lifecycle and VerCD for model delivery, they show that true business value comes from a manageable platform where automation, version control, and secure deployment work seamlessly together.

I reviewed the breakdown of how Uber utilizes AI in its engineering processes, and my main takeaway is quite simple: their strength lies not in a single "smart" assistant, but in the platform layer. At the core is Michelangelo—an internal end-to-end system that covers the entire ML lifecycle: data, training, validation, deployment, and online serving.

I specifically noted Michelangelo's three-plane architecture. The control plane manages APIs and lifecycle, the offline plane runs Spark or Ray pipelines with DAG logic and checkpoints, while the online plane serves real-time predictions and handles feature serving. This is no longer just a set of scripts around models; it is a full-fledged AI architecture where the platform dictates the standards.

The second crucial detail is VerCD. I see it not merely as version control for ML artifacts, but as a mechanism that cures the biggest headache for large teams: dependent models, unstable experiments, and complex promotion to production. Uber formalized a five-step lifecycle: ingestion, experimentation, validation, promotion, and serving.
