How to Fix the Claude Code Bug That Breaks Chat History

Users are facing a rendering bug in Claude Code where the UI only shows the last response or a 'thinking' block. A practical workaround exists: add the CLAUDE_CODE_NO_FLICKER=1 flag to settings.json. Technical Context

I stumbled upon a pretty nasty bug in Claude Code: during a session, the history suddenly stops displaying correctly. Sometimes, I could only see the assistant's last response. Other times, it was even worse: my message would disappear, leaving only the 'thinking' block on the screen, as if the UI decided I no longer needed context.

Let me clarify something important right away. As of this writing, I don't have confirmation of this specific case in Anthropic's official documentation or changelogs. A quick search shows that Claude Code has indeed had UI issues lately: flickering, rendering artifacts, layout jumps, and strange behavior in long sessions. However, this particular scenario with the disappearing history and the env flag has so far emerged as a user-found workaround, not a documented feature.

Nevertheless, the fix worked for me. You need to add a new environment flag to your settings.json:

After this change, Claude Code switches to a new rendering mode. It feels like this was recently added to the client: clickable blocks appear, tool calls can be collapsed and expanded with a mouse click, and most importantly, the interface starts behaving like a proper tool again, not a poltergeist in your terminal.

I'd describe it this way: the bug seems to be a problem with the display layer, not the model itself. Claude can continue to think and generate a response correctly, but the UI ruins the user experience. Many people instinctively blame the model in these situations, when it's actually the layer between the output, history, and tool blocks that's failing.

If you're engaged in long coding sessions, especially those involving tool use, agentic passes, and frequent file edits, this kind of glitch is doubly frustrating. In moments like these, I quickly switch to Codex or other CLI tools, because when the interface hides your context, productivity hits a wall.

What This Means for Business and Automation

At first glance, this seems like a minor interface issue. In practice, it's not. If a team's primary AI tool has a collapsing history window, it's not just the developer's comfort that suffers—it's the entire AI automation pipeline around the code: reviews, patch generation, agentic workflows, and the maintenance of internal utilities.

I see this regularly in projects where AI adoption stalls not because of model quality, but because of the unreliability of the operational loop. The business doesn't care why an engineer lost 20 minutes—whether it was due to latency, a bad prompt, or a rendering bug. The result is the same: less trust in the tool and a retreat back to manual work.

The teams that win here are the ones with a backup plan. If one agent glitches or the UI acts strangely, the AI architecture must have a Plan B: a different interface, another provider, a fallback via CLI, local logs, or saving history outside the client window.
